You may have read many articles regarding artificial sweeteners but this one may be unique. We will focus on the health aspects of diets that contain artificial sweeteners (AS). Most AS products are identified as non-caloric which leads you to believe that they will be healthful food additives. You will see all the ads which tell you that AS products are better than sugar or corn syrup (fructose) but I think you should learn the hidden facts.

Identifying the most popular AS products is easy. They are Splenda ,Aspartame, Saccharine, Acesulfame Potassium (acesfulfame K)

These popular sweeteners are incorporated into almost every lite yogurt, ice cream, low-carb products, diet drink, puddings, and “reduced-sugar” products. Even some of the diet supplement protein powders are loaded with artificial sweeteners (AS). Go check out the label on that good tasting energy bar.

If you think Splenda is the best artificial sweetener you would be close. It is the best advertised product with the claim that their product is made from real sugar. The fact remains that it is an artificial, man-made product and not a natural product. What isn’t on the label is the fact that chlorine is used to modify the sugar molecule making it similar to a chlorinated pesticide.

Nobody wants to eat pesticides or poison themselves or their families. But consuming artificial sweeteners (AS) are not good food. Some people will argue that they may be better than sugar and corn syrup products that you quit eating several years ago. The truth is that the health problems associated with “diet” and “lite” products are totally different than the ones associated with sugar and corn syrup.

You have read about the problems with sugar or high fructose corn syrup added to food products. Consuming foods with these additives create excess empty calories, a blood sugar spike, and will initiate an insulin surge. This process promotes fat gain, but also stimulates your appetite further, making things even worse.

Well let’s look at the case for artificial sweeteners (AS). The most appealing aspect of using AS products is that you reduce the calorie count. There is growing evidence that AS products will increase your appetite for sweets and other carbohydrates, which will cause you to eat more later in the day. The calories you thought saved are back. In addition, AS products can stimulate high insulin levels which usually promotes fat storage.

Those simple facts should clearly indicate that your are losing the battle to lose fat if you choose either artificial sweeteners or sugar/corn syrup additives. If you must decide which evil is worse, consider the following facts.

The 4 artificial sweeteners listed at the beginning of this article are nasty chemicals that the human body is simply not meant to ingest. Aside from the problems I touched on so far, there are other health issues such as:

* some have been linked to potential cancer risks

* negative effects on the liver, kidneys, and other organs

* stimulating cravings

* gastrointestinal problems

* developmental problems in children and fetuses

* headaches

Of course the companies that sell the products will continue to claim that they are fully safe. Don’t believe them! If you believe that the body was designed to deal with these substances then you might believe that your body was designed to deal with cigarette smoke.

Let’s evaluate you alternatives. If you are now convinced that artificial sweeteners are at the bottom of the list, the next items on the list are sugar and corn syrup. These empty calorie additives are not as beneficial as raw honey, organic maple syrup or sorghum syrup. Sorghum along with the other natural alternatives provide nutrients and anti-oxidants. So don’t return to the empty calorie refined sugars and start with naturally nutritious foods.

If the issue of calories is still uppermost and you now must avoid the poisonous artificial sweeteners, then you might consider a natural sweetener: Stevia. The sweetener Stevia is a non-caloric herb that has been used for thousands of years as a sweetener. Stevia is a South American herb with few calories and no known health drawbacks.

I know you can buy this product at any reputable nutrition or health food store. You will enjoy better health by removing these poisons from your diet. If you want to know more about good nutrition and losing fat, visit us.
