Teeth grinding, as the name suggests, is the condition in which an individual grinds his or her teeth during sleep. There is not one specific cause why this may take place, however, the most commonly known is that of stress.
In case the teeth are not aligned properly, teeth grinding is likely to take place as one may unconsciously grind or rub them together while asleep. It is always a sensible idea to have it checked by a dentist, before this leads to further problems that may be more serious in nature.
Teeth grinding may cause further problems in the person’s teeth, jaw and mouth. At times, some teeth may be lost, or get broken due to constantly grinding them with one another.
The reasons for the onset of teeth grinding may vary from person to person. The following are the ones that most commonly lead to it:
Stress is the most significant cause that leads to teeth grinding. According to psychiatrists and psychologists, stress usually has a negative impact on a person’s sleeping schedule. Thus, stress may cause uneasiness in a person, leading to the grinding of teeth unconsciously.
Next is the anger and aggressiveness factor. If a person has pent up anger and has not been talking about it for too long, he or she may manifest suppressed anger through sleep by clenching teeth and grinding them together – exactly how people usually express anger while they are awake.
Another reason for teeth grinding among very young children is the fact that new teeth may be growing. This is one stage during which they may experience it while they are sleeping. The reason why this may happen is that while teeth are growing they usually cause feelings of uneasiness and irritation. To get rid of these unpleasant feelings, children may engage in teeth grinding.
